Turned out some idiot dropped a castle nut in the door probably ten years ago and it was sometimes hanging up on the threads of the vertical rod. Argh. #locksmithlife #modularsynth

Spyder drill bits are no joke. Anybody who's drill Spyder drill bits are no joke. Anybody who's drilled out a stripped screw knows how fast it wears down a drill bit. I drilled out a stripped 1/4x20 screw and then drilled several pilot holes in this tube steel. No visible damage to the drill bit afterwards! It's still being abused on a daily basis. #spyder #locksmith

The next day the building management would call these guys out to replace their levers with the same cheap levers! I replaced them with Marks gate latches. No lever to force on the outside of the door. Much better building security.

Subsequent break-ins have required ever more severe solutions culminating in a steel interlocking astragal, two deadbolts and a grade 1 lever with the return cut off to prevent prying attacks. You get what you vote for, Seattle!

The installer of this astragal didn’t bother to cut a hole for the cylinder protector. Somebody could pry the cylinder out because of this.
