Got to fix a really old Sargent unit lock yesterda Got to fix a really old Sargent unit lock yesterday. Needed a replacement steel spring. Some goomba used a paperclip or something for awhile before it broke. Harbor freight sells a coil spring assortment for less than $10 if anyone out there needs a spring for a busted unit lock with broken return spring.

I fixed a rinky dink little mortise lock today wit I fixed a rinky dink little mortise lock today with broken spring and bolt was bent so it could not deadbolt.
It was obvious how to shape the spring because of the little notches on the latch and the deadbolt

A $600 lock does nobody much good if you can still A $600 lock does nobody much good if you can still pry the door open. I personally used a spoon lying on the ground nearby to open this door. People are breaking into this door constantly. Maybe the spoon is there for this purpose?
After putting some hinge shims in this door hangs much closer to the jamb. Somebody will have to pry a lot harder with the spoon to get in next time, and they probably won't get in at all without a wrecking bar. If anybody was curious i was paid to fix this, I'm not some vigilante door fixer.

PSA: thieves are now using angle grinders to break PSA: thieves are now using angle grinders to break in to stores in Seattle. This was done at 0430 on N 45th St in a high visibility area in plain view of the QFC. I saw the security cam footage, sparks flying everywhere and probably pretty loud. The hook bolt didn't give, but you can cut through a hook bolt with time.
If you're worried about people with angle grinders getting into your store, know that there are alloys that are more resistant to cutoff wheels. Masterlocks won't work well. Abus 8k chain and their chain padlocks are a good choice. That and a Doberman.

It's super easy to convert a mortise lock to passa It's super easy to convert a mortise lock to passage function. This is a good idea if you're putting an electronic deadbolt above it. Then you won't push the lock button and lock yourself out! Usually you just need to remove the buttons and coordinator.
