One of the biggest security problems I see in resi One of the biggest security problems I see in residential setting is deadbolt strikes not drilled deep enough for bolt to extend all the way.
This exit trim wasn't designed very well. As someb This exit trim wasn't designed very well. As somebody discovered if you push the handle down hard enough it breaks parts inside and the door opens. That's called failsafe in the hardware industry but fall secure is what they should be striving for.
I fixed it by putting a screw where the broken part used to be so the screw head will keep the door locked.

Here is an interesting one. The thumbturn screwhol Here is an interesting one. The thumbturn screwholes were stripped out so the homeowner decided to put a longer screw through the hole but it bottomed out on something metal. He drilled a pilot hole into this metal object and the lock stopped working.
Turns out the homeowner drilled into the back of the lock cylinder and broke the cam in half. The cam fell behind the bolt and jammed it in place so the bolt wouldn't retract and they couldn't shut the door.

Here's a bunch of mortise locks for those on the f Here's a bunch of mortise locks for those on the future looking to see how they should be assembled. One was missing a coil spring, another was locking people out when the buttons would switch if the door was shut. Somebody soldered a nubbin on the back of the latch to prevent overextending. It was so unlubricated that certain parts though installed weren't working at all.
Lock button removed though spring could have been strengthened instead. Lubricated. Fixed knob rose alignment which i think was originally installed incorrectly, the spindle wasn't centered and so knob rubbed excessively.
Last shows a deadbolt spring replaced. They malfunction without that spring, you can get locked out even with the key!
Fixed 4 today which reminds me it's time to harvest old windshield wipers for flat springs.

This old russwin malfunctioned when somebody took This old russwin malfunctioned when somebody took the set screw out and then dropped it in the lock while trying to screw it back in. There's also a wood screw jamming the deadbolt you can see poking out.
Somebody drilled the set screw of this lock, maybe a lockout but more likely a malfunctioning lock. This is where the pros drill mortise locks if they can't pick the lock for some reason. If they knew to drill there i bet they were decent at picking locks. Also you can see lots of scratches on the latch retracting lever (don't know the technical term, sorry) in the bolt assembly. If it's working properly you can push it down with your finger to unlock the door but all the scratches might indicate that somebody was trying to depress it really hard to overcome something jamming it.

Schlage is nice enough to make their locks compati Schlage is nice enough to make their locks compatible with 99 type cylinders, or so-called universal cylinders. For all I know they invented this form factor. If you have a five pin cylinder with the cap pin in the right spot it will work. Here's a kwikset cylinder in a schlage be365. Posting this in response to @tricountylocksmithservice and their b60 deadbolt.
