Repair your door after a break-in

So somebody kicked your door in and maybe the frame is splintered. You call around and find out that a new door is going to cost you $$$ on top of all the stuff that got stolen. What to do?

It isn’t always necessary to replace your door. I’m not going to necessarily make your door look pretty after it gets kicked in but unless it was forced open with a fireman’s axe I can probably make it secure again. The video below illustrates this well. This is a back of house door the public won’t see so aesthetics are of little concern. The door is reinforced with a wrap plate and the door frame is repaired with armor concepts’ “Fix-a-Jamb”. The latter product is screwed in with long screws into the stud.

To my knowledge this door is still secure a year later. It is in a bad part of town near a methadone clinic and sees people trying to break into it pretty frequently.

Not only can I repair your door and frame, I can sell you better locks to prevent this from happening in the future. Along with the fix-a-jamb there are lots of security strikes that will probably do better than what you have. Schlage’s better deadbolts come with cup strikes, for example. Even the least expensive commercial grade deadbolt I sell comes with three inch long screws which should be standard on exterior doors. Unfortunately we often see only half inch long screws for these strike plates in modern construction.*

*Sometimes longer screws cannot be installed because the door frame has a side light or something behind it that would get drilled into if one were to use long screws there.
